Top 10 must-read books on vacation..PART 2 (My favourite picks)

Picking up where things are left yesterday =)

-------------------------------------------

6. The "Anne" series by Lucy M. Montgomery
Publishers might have refused to publish this series when Lucy handed the manuscript of  Anne Of Green Gables, but readers certainly don't think that way. Including myself, it is very well-written, and I LOVE the descriptions of Prince Edward Island! I certainly find that Lucy's style of describing the beauty of the Island is second to none, I read the book and I wanted to live there! I love Anne Shirley too, the tenacious and imaginative red-haired orphan girl who just needed some love to blossom. I like how she sees the world and appreciates the simple beauty of her life. I also like the fact that she, like all of us, has her own faults. A lot of books tend to veer towards a perfect character, flawless and does everything beautifully without a mistake. News flash, readers don't really like it. We want something that we can relate to, not just another perfect person, so Anne, with her hot temper and hilarious slip-ups, is what most of us readers love about her.

7. The "Harry Potter" series by J.K.Rowling
This has taken the writing world by storm when they were published. The world has certainly gained loads of people who has taken a fancy to reading after being influenced by this series. I, during my naive years, didn't like reading Harry Potter because - immaturity strikes - I was a huge judge of book covers, and any book that doesn't LOOK appealing will be instant dislike. After watching the movie, I got hold of the books and voila! I am hooked! I can't get enough of Harry Potter, and I've been wishing for my Hogwarts acceptance letter every Christmas! An owl swoops by and I get an instant rush, especially when owls are uncommon in Malaysia. -LOL-
**** My cousin, who is also a huge fan of Harry Potter, wrote a comical piece on his school's magazine of how he's waiting for the letter too and how he has been able to spark magic since a young age. He said that the owls must have no clue where Malaysia is and that's why we didn't get our letter. (I suggested him to send some pigeons to Hogwarts, but the pigeons didn't return. )  =D

8. Kiss Heaven Goodbye by Tasmina Perry
If you are travelling to places that involves sun, sandy beaches, the ocean, basically anything tropical, then this book can be considered as the characters in the book are also on vacation. I don't have much comment on this book, but if you are a very uptight sort of person, very conservative, then please refrain from reading this as detailed descriptions of intercourse can be spotted throughout the book.

9. House Rules by Jodi Picoult
After I've finished this book, I've gained a remarkable amount of insight into a mind of an Aspie kid. This kid with Asperger, Jacob Hunt, is obsessed with forensics. He can spout endless information about his favourite subject. The irony is that his love of forensics accidentally charged him with murder. Reading this book has also made me think about the legal system in America doesn't really take anything personal into account. It, of course, put me off the notion of being a lawyer - LOL - I really liked the part where Oliver, the lawyer, came into the story. I like how witty he is and how the romance between him and Emma Hunt, Jacob's mother, sparked. Read this book and get shaken and stirred.=)

10. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
This book is astounding beyond belief. In comparison to say, books like Jane Austen, which requires a focused mind, this book is a relief for one's brain. I've often find that when I'm tired, the classics don't make the cut as light reading, however, Little Women certainly is enjoyable for people who want to read the classics and refrain from straining their exhausted brains!

-------------------------------------------------

These books are what keeps me going during vacation. When you're on holiday, nothing could be more enjoyable than reading a good book and chill. Hope you guys like it!

Top 10 must-read books on vacation... PART 1 (my favourite picks)

For all of you out there who love reading, a book, or books, is a must-have, whether if you are out at a restaurant, dangling from a cliff, or in my case, during mealtimes (I know, it's unhealthy, but putting down a good book just when things start to get exciting, well, you'll understand the feeling. -LOL-). We can't get enough of books, so why should a vacation be an exception? My backpack is heavy, not from clothes, but from the books that I lug with me on vacation. (Shout out to those who has done this too =D )

***Now I'm writing this during working hours, so I'll do Part 1 now before moving on Part 2, so this explains the splitting of parts.

-------------------------------------------------------------

1. Anything by Madeline Wickham aka Sophie Kinsella.
Ok, I know this is not a book title, but really, literally anything by her is a must-read! I am a hugh Kinsella fan! She comes up with the most amazing stories! If you really want to narrow it down, I suggest you bring her Shopaholic series, as that is by far her BEST! If you're not a Kinsella fan before, you will be after you read Becky Bloomwood's extraordinary antics. As Kinsella is in the financial field, this series depicts finance in a down-to-earth way, letting us see finance through Becky's eyes. Screw the boring graphs and analytical charts, finance is so much more than talking posh and knowing your way through PowerPoint. To sum it up, the Shopaholic series should be a recommended basic guide to understanding finance and you get to know the world of a shopaholic! (Plus you gain knowledge about designer brands, bonus!)

2. Anything by John Green
OK, I know this is not a book title too =D but John Green's books are a permanent fixture in my backpack. You can choose anything, from Looking For Alaska to his most famous The Fault In Our Stars, and you wouldn't want to put them down after you start. They are as addictive as Sophie Kinsella's books. I feasted through all of his books during my vacation in Krabi, and after the first one (which was Looking For Alaska,) I couldn't stop after that. I finished with TFIOS, the best!

3. Marley and Me by John Grogan
This is finally a legitimate book title =D This is the epic lifetime story of a journalist John Grogan, his wife Jenny Grogan, and his bundle of mischief___ Marley the dog. John wrote about his lovable yet mischievous Lab, Marley. Named after Bob Marley, the deceased singer, Marley the dog kind of tarnished (in a good way) the respectable singer's name with his crazy antics and boundless energy. Marley may not be the world's best behaved dog, but he is beloved by people who have read about him. I've grown to love Labs since reading Marley and Me, and I find the stuff that Marley does a riot (including being kicked out of obedience school, which I can relate to my - now dead - English Cocker, Milo). Remember to prepare Kleenex though, read the book to find out why.

4. Diary of Anne Frank
I picked this book quite a few times to go on vacation with me. Apart from understanding the true feelings of Jews in hiding and the vile actions by the Nazis, in my heart, I thought that bringing Anne's diary would somehow make up for the injustice and death that Anne and all the other Jews have suffered. Bringing her diary might somehow be like bringing her along for a vacation, let her enjoy the sun, sky and freedom after being cooped up in the Annexe for so long. I know this is not cheerful reading but, inexplicably, I like to read it.

5. The Art of Racing In The Rain
Because of this book, I got to know Ayrton Senna and his tragic demise on the tracks. This is written from a dog's point of view, a dog who likes to race as much as his owner. Follow Enzo the dog and read his take on the world. I gained a bit of knowledge of the Formula 1 system, but the whole storyboard is pretty good, but remember to have Kleenex by your side, just in case. =)

To UEC candidates and future UEC candidates: Are getting A's really important?

Before I start I would like to say that this is purely my observations and opinions. If you don't like seeing criticism, as I'm about to touch on some sensitive stuff, I would highly recommend you to refrain from reading this blog post and come back another time =)

____________Are getting A's really important?

This is an issue that I came across recently. Somebody commented on a post that was originally meant for congratulating students who got A's (myself included) and saying that A's are not really important, and what about those that doesn't have enough A's? Shouldn't they deserve more attention and congratulations than those who got a lot of A's? Now, I would beg to differ with this gentleman.

First of all, dear gentleman, I can see that you have some issues with people who got A's. Was it a childhood memory that comprises you getting a crappy result? Maybe. But I would like to say that dude, this is REALITY! In the real world, would you expect somebody to say: "Oh, I would like to congratulate you on failing every subject, I would hire you as a lecturer instantly! I would tell the whole world you failed every subject and well done!" ? No! They wouldn't! Wake up! In the real world people will be judgemental, and the one way to stop their judgements is to improve yourself. For those dear people who didn't do so well? Fight back! Show everyone that you are not a hopeless case! Fight for yourself, don't just sit there and let others walk all over you!

Secondly, by the way that you said it's not important, I think that that is only an excuse, a get-away ticket to laze around, be happy-go-lucky and basically just doing nothing. Like I said, the real world wouldn't allow that. Yes, you can live, but the chances will be slimmer unless you are lucky and happened to be a billionaire, you can't really coast through life easily.

Thirdly, what's wrong with congratulating students who did well? Surely they have given their best and they got what they deserved?

I don't know about the others, but let me tell you something about my life. I wasn't the brightest button to begin with, I'm not considered academically successful during my early years of education. I wasn't noticed, because I was too average, and I got beaten up mentally by some teachers in my previous school by saying:"oh, you don't have a future because you don't have a good academic achievement. You go to an independent school, so you are automatically trash, you won't excel in your studies ever because you are just plain stupid.." So many negative feedback for me during my years of primary schooling, and nobody knew that I was going through this. I didn't say a word, because in my mind I'm planning that I WILL show them that I'm not worthless and I CAN achieve good results. I'm not as weak as they think! Let them think like that now, because after I graduate from high school, I'm going with my head held high and they will regret saying all those words. I did what I could during the last year of cramming for UEC and I got what I deserved, a better result! So to this dear gentleman, after years of transforming myself from a person who has no future to someone who has a great future ahead, don't you think that this deserves some congratulations on an effort? It is not easy, transforming myself, it took years before I got to where I am today.

So I'm not agreeing with this gentleman. Anybody can do it, it's just the matter of whether you want it badly or not. I did it, and I still can't believe it. It's not acceptable to say that oh, no A's is fine, I wouldn't have to work hard. That's not good as that is just an excuse. If you fail after making an effort, hey, at least you tried your best ^^ At least you didn't give up so easily. At least you worked hard. That'll be worthy to tell your kids someday =D

I'm just trying to say that having no A's is fine, you still have choices, but the choices are more limited. If you have more A's, you'll have more choices. That's how the real world is.

To all UEC candidates or future UEC candidates, YOU CAN DO IT! You can have a normal life while cramming for the exam. I made it this far and I was considered a hopeless case. If I can achieve something, then you can too. Just focus on what you want and stop being scared. Be yourself and wish all of you the best! =)

If you have other opinions, please feel free to share them with me. =)

Momentous Days #1

Today's kind of an eventful day so I thought that this day should deserve a blog post =)

_________________________The B'day presents
It is with great regret that I wasn't in Malaysia during these 2 momentous days, the first one was Phei Nee's birthday on 1212 while the second one was Chui Sia's birthday on 1220. Both of them are my friends and I missed out on both of their celebrations! [sobs... TT]  A great apology to both of you if you happened to read my blog..

Anyway, while I was in Krabi, I was not only relaxing, I was on a mission! Mission B'day gift hunting! I wanted presents that they would use and match their personality, while still keeping in touch with the Krabi theme, so I had my work cut out for me.
** note that this was quite challenging for me to do! I bought wallets, bags, and bookmarks, only to find the perfect (or at least in my opinion of perfect) gifts for both of them!

I ended up buying a bracelet for Phei Nee and an anklet for Chui Sia. Both of the jewellery are made out of pebbles from the sea and they are in hues of rainbow and white, linked together by a simple silver chain, so I bought them =DD

Presents? Accomplished. Now the fun part is not choosing the gifts, it is wrapping up the gifts! I enjoy wrapping presents and decorating them with care, so I spent about half an hour choosing the most beautiful and the most girly wrapping paper, white ribbon and lace tape from More & Save and spent about the whole morning and part of my afternoon decorating and wrapping up the precious gifts.

I didn't get to take a photo of the anklet and the bracelet, but I took a photo of the finished product =D

Are they girly and pretty? I hope so. Although I'm not a girly girl I still think they looked fabulous =D

I hoped they like it =) I drove all the way to Star Parade to give the anklet to Chui Sia and to Billion to give the bracelet to Phei Nee ^__^ Happy Birthday to both of you =DDD

**NOTE, any questions about the gifts or the decoration, you can comment down below and I'll answer you =D Check for daily updates!

I got a pretty shocking result! I was expecting F9 everywhere!

Here's my result. =)

Click the photo to see the results.

That was unexpected, I'm quite happy since I'm not considered an academically successful student. so to be on top...  totally unaccounted for.. =)

I thank all the teachers who've helped me achieve what I am today. I would also like to thank some teachers that dragged me down and beaten me with harsh words, because what doesn't kill me makes me stronger ! Thanks to all my friends who've been beside me on this roller coaster, and thanks to those that tried to beat me, my competitive juices got a level up in the end! Thank you all for this amazing journey! =D

Without pain, how could we know joy?

=)

___________________Diet Days____

Well, Thai food is delicious and how can you resist the tempting smells of Thai food? So it is not my fault when my body shape went away and hello, body fat! Wow... Suddenly I regretted eating so much =DD Judging from my mum's face, she's on the same wave length as me.

Need I say much? It's sports shoes and a healthy walk every morning starting now!

I guess it's goodbye bread, rice, biscuits etc carbohydrates T^T

Relaxing in Krabi, Thailand

To all of you out there who wants to know how to relax in Krabi, you've come to the right website =) I've just got back from Krabi, and I would like to share to you the places to relax in Krabi, Thailand.
I'll be giving all of you the links of information on relaxation (My version of relaxation), so feel free to click on the underlined words. =)
**Please note that for those of you who are adrenaline junkies, I recommend you to go to other websites as this blog post here won't be the right one for you, but thanks for stopping by =D

-------------------------------------First Day---------

Here is a map of Krabi. I went there on 17/12/2015 until 20/12/2015. It's about 5 to 8 hours by car, depending on your speed and whether or not the officials on the Malaysian borders are hard-working on that particular day. My family and I drove from Alor Setar around 5.30 in the morning and arrived at Krabi at about 11.00, not bad as they felt lazy that day and opened only ONE counter. It's not hard driving to Thailand via the Alor Setar borders.

**note that there are some other borders as options. We drove through the Bukit Kayu Hitam border, the others that I know of are Padang Besar, and Kangar, which are in Perlis. There are other options, feel free to click >>here<< and ctrl+f the word "border crossings" to know more about the borders of Thailand and Malaysia. =)

We arrived at our hotel, Ancora Blu Hotel (click the words for booking on the Agoda website). It is brand new, very clean and the theme, which means "the blue anchor hotel", is beloved by me, as I'm a fan of the colours blue and white. Free WiFi and breakfast is available! Hallelujah! We spent some time settling down our belongings and headed out for lunch. There's some eateries near the hotel (walking distance, of course), and we ended up at an eatery that has a garden-like set-up. Unfortunately, the food was not up to standards, the Tom Yam lacked spiciness and it was too sour. I recommend all of you who want lunch to keep on going if you want great quality food.

After our tummies are reasonably satisfied, we went back to the hotel for a nap. (well, my parents took a nap while I read a book by John Green. My sister ended up surfing on the internet.)

a view of my "Ancora Blu" room shared with my sister. =)

We took a Tuk Tuk to the Ao Nang beach, which is quite near the hotel, considered walking distance if you're a walker =)

Ao Nang beach. White sands and clear sea water with no trash in sight, a significant difference than the beaches in some parts of Malaysia. I love how clean the whole beach is, despite the fact that they're preparing for the Ao Nang Beach Festival at our first day in Krabi (what perfect timing on our part! heeheehee ^^ ) We got to the beach and I waded into deeper water while my dad and my sister hunted for seashells on the shoreline. My mum sat in the shade as she said she couldn't afford to get tanned. A lot of Westerners, as I've noticed, love sunbathing while us Asians hide from the sun! Shows how climates affect people from different regions!
Here's some photos taken on our first day at the Ao Nang beach =)

A beautiful view of the sunset at Ao Nang beach =)

Gazing at the golden sunset with an indescribable feeling......

Mum, sis, and me at the back with a long boat~ (not to mention someone's butt =P )

My loyalty is to the sea.... =)

A gorgeous end to a beautiful day. =)

We went walking by the beach and ended up eating dinner at a romantic spot by the beach. It is called The Last Fisherman Bar (click to see the reviews). It is located at the end of the beach and overlooks the sea. Sitting under the trees, with soft lights and candles illuminating the whole place, enjoying a glass of wine or a bottle of Chang beer and have scrumptious Thai food while the cool ocean breeze caresses you, it is truly a relaxing experience and a romantic end to the evening, perfect for relaxation. =)

------------------------------Second Day----------

We had breakfast at the Ancora Blu hotel, but the taste of their American breakfasts were neither tasty nor in an American size, so that's a bummer.
We switched hotels on this day, as we wanted somewhere closer to the beach, so we picked Phra Nang Inn (click the name to book on Agoda.). It is smacked right in front of the beach, and in front of all the hubbub and activity, so it's bustling about any time of the day and night. No photos were taken as my phone had problems at that time so I'll just tell all of you about the places near here. The beach is just a few steps away, night markets and stores are opened just on the left of the corner, you can just walk and immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle.

We rested in the afternoon and headed to the beach as usual in the evening. We stopped by a stall selling pancakes for 30 baht (vaguely, the easy way to calculate is RM3) and had honey, banana and egg pancakes. (The stall owner misinterpreted and thought we wanted all three of these flavours mixed into a pancake LOL, it ended up tasting very peculiar. Language barriers are a big issue there.)
** I recommend honey pancakes and banana pancakes, but make sure you express how you want them to be clearly (lol).
We sat on our 'tikar' and ate the pancakes while enjoying the panoramic view of the beach.
Perfect timing on our part, the Ao Nang beach festival was held, so we got up when we heard loud, thumping music behind us. Well, well, well, the "she-males" are out! The icons of Thailand! They are more beautiful than us women! I'm so jealous of their perfect bodies!

Look at his perfect body shape, and then I gazed back at mine, and I felt..... a need to go to the gym for a workout SOON!

We squeezed our way through the crowds and crowds of people! I hated every moment as I'm a tad claustrophobic, I hate crowds! We tried some of the food from the stalls, but none of them strikes as delicious.
As usual, walking and playing burns off a lot of energy, so we went back to The Last Fisherman and had our dinner with the forever present bottle of Chang beer. The only thing that changed was an electricity shortage that plunged everything into shadows, making the atmosphere creepy and more romantic at the same time. (Everyone cheered and applauded when the electricity came back! )

After dinner, we went back to the inn, showered and changed into comfy clothes and proceeded to The Beach Bar (click the name for the Facebook page of the bar for reviews), where they serve delicious cocktails (mocktails for non-alcoholic drinkers!). We sat and enjoyed the ocean breeze with soothing music from the bar.

****take note! A lot of tourists notice the downstairs of the bar and tend to miss out the bar's balcony area! It is a quiet, beautiful place to sit and have a drink. There's a flight of stairs that'll take you up to the balcony. Go up the flight of stone steps and on the second floor you'll see a flight of wooden stairs and Phra Nang Inn's pool area, please keep on going until you reach the top! Tourists don't notice this area and it is a small part of heaven! You can look down below and there's the bar, enjoy people-watching and star-gazing! The ocean breeze is a delightful bonus! Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to enjoy!

--------------------Third Day----------------------

This day was spent by having breakfast at a small local eatery called the Number 1. Chinese and Thai food available for those who, too, had enough of American breakfasts in Thailand. It is run by an elderly woman and she serves the best Chinese and local dishes for us! A lot of tourists don't notice this place as it is quite secluded! You can try searching for it, it has a sign inside the eatery with the words “中国料理” (translation: Chinese cuisine). It is absolutely mouth-watering and served in huge portions! I recommend noodles with soup and pork. Try adding the spice flakes to spice things up! It is DELICIOUS!

***Take note!! Due to the overflow of Westerners, especially Americans, the prices of the food near the beach are more expensive and monotonous. (Western food everywhere!) If you want the ultimate Krabi experience for your taste buds, try getting a Tuk Tuk and do a little dinner-hunting away from the beach, you'll be surprised! =)

After breakfast, we drove until we got lost (intended lost~) and ended up at the Fossil Beach, which the admission fee is 200 baht for children and 300 baht for adults. It is a preserved site for fossils and we didn't enter.
.... We also ended up at a place just by the roadside where bamboo furniture are made! Handmade! My parents ordered a custom-made hanger for towels and bamboo chairs! (namely the bamboo place)
.....We took a trip to the dumpster of Krabi too =D (by mistake~ haha)

The day was spent the same way as the previous days, naps in the afternoon, pancakes and fun at the Ao Nang beach. The only difference was that we had dinner at another eatery right beside the Number 1! It serves delicious Thai food too! I recommend their Tom Yam Kung!

*** Take note! For Westerners who come to Asia and happened to stumble upon my blog, we don't eat like you guys =) Let's say for example, my family and I are a grand total of 4 people. We order 4 plates of rice and choose what we like to eat and SHARE it. A lot of Westerners that are first-timers think that each dish is supposed to be eaten separately, which is not the case. I saw two Americans order a plate of rice and a plate of steamed vegetables each. You can order what you like and share it, that's our style of eating =) Order a bowl of Tom Yam, steamed vegetables, throw in some oysters and voila! Share it around, you'll be eating the Asian way =)

We walked all the way back to the hotel and I shopped for some souvenirs for my friends =) The evening ended with a cocktail back at the Beach Bar. =)

------------------Last Day------------------

It's the last day and we drove off to the bamboo place to pick up our custom-made furniture, only to learn that they forgot. So we waited while the furniture were being made for about an hour.

A long car ride later, we arrived at the Malaysian border.
They were feeling quite lazy too, so the border was jammed.
We arrived home at about 8 in the evening. =)

Well, this is the end of my relaxing journey in Krabi, hope you guys find the information and advice helpful! =DD If you have any questions, feel free to comment your question down below and check for my answers daily! Be happy, and stay safe ! Happy Holidays!! =DD

Top 10 Billboard charts =) *Xin Dear version

Hey guys! A lot of people have the assumption that I'm purely a classical music girl as I play the piano, violin and other instruments bla bla bla, but the truth? I love you Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and all of the classical composers, but I'm an average teenager too =) I like songs that a typical teenager likes. I am a harsh critic when it comes to songs, so this list is a compilation of the top 10 songs that, after my intense scrutiny and judging, made it to my playlist of the day. =)

1. Taylor Swift____ Blank Space

This song is quite catchy for me, and Taylor certainly outshone herself! There is NOTHING that I DON'T LOVE ABOUT THIS SONG ! For Taylor newbies out there, this is totally a thumbs up! =)

2. One Direction____ Drag Me Down

I know Zayn Malik left 1D, and yet they pull out a song like this, will Zayn regret his decision? =)

3. One Direction_____ Night Changes

For those that love the more soothing songs (- or at least something like that, haha- ) this will be my top pick, again another epic song by One Direction! ^___^

4. One Republic____ Apologize

One Republic is actually a music group that I want to applaud for the usage of the cello throughout their songs! I love those mellow, rich tones! This song is delicious! My favourite song from One Republic!

5. One Republic___Counting Stars

Guys, listen to the lyrics, aren't they meaningful? Not to mention that catchy rhythm and tune! An ALL TIME FAVOURITE!

6. One Republic____Secrets

Have you ever experienced that phase where you keep on repeating your favourite song over and over again because you can't get enough of it? I went through that phase with this song! -thumbs up!

7. Drake___ Hotline Bling

Very catchy, but I don't get the ridiculous dance moves *?

8. Elle King___ Ex's and Oh's

One-Two-Three they're gonna run back to me =)

9. Meaghan Trainor___ Dear Future Husband

Words can't describe =) ---- an extra note, Miss Monkey from the Eh Bee family sang this song on Youtube and it is BETTER, her voice is so beautiful !

10. Omi__ Cheerleader

Go for the remix by Felix Jaehn! That version is better!

So these are the top 10 songs to make it to my billboard. I hope I helped some newbies out there, as I used to be a newbie, I understand the "I-want-to-listen-to-modern-music-but-i-don't-know-where-to-start-Google-please-help-me" feeling =D

Next time I'll be posting the top 10 classical music to make it to my list of favourites =) So stay tuned!
